In May 2026, Bucharest will become one of the world’s most important centers for contemporary music.
The prestigious ISCM World New Music Days festival will take place from May 23 to 31, under the title “Columna Infinita” (Infinite Column), paying tribute to Constantin Brâncuși’s iconic sculpture on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the sculptor’s birth.
Constantin Brâncuși (1876–1957) one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century. The sculpture stands in Târgu Jiu and is among Brâncuși’s most famous and significant creations — a 29.33-meter-high column composed of modular elements that symbolizes infinity, spiritual ascension, and eternity.
Brâncuși was born on February 19, 1876, so in 2026 we celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth. This significant milestone gives Romania and Bucharest a special opportunity to honor one of the most influential modern sculptors in the world in a worthy manner.
Columna Infinita is far more than just a physical sculpture. For Brâncuși, it was a philosophical and spiritual manifestation: a symbol of the power of simple forms, the pursuit of essence, and a modern interpretation of Romanian folk art.
The work is monumental in its simplicity — it was precisely this minimalism combined with profound meaning that made Brâncuși a pioneer of modern sculpture, exerting a huge influence on later artists such as Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi, and many other 20th-century creators.
For the 2026 World New Music Days, the festival organizers deliberately connected contemporary music with Brâncuși’s legacy. The motto “Columna Infinita” highlights that music — like Brâncuși’s column — is capable of transcending borders, reaching into the infinite, and creating a dialogue that spans generations.
The World New Music Days is the most important annual festival of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM), founded in 1923. Each year it is hosted by a different country and brings together the world’s leading contemporary composers, performers, and ensembles.
This festival is a true delight for lovers of classical and contemporary music and attracts a significant number of international visitors to Romania.
